What is a Care Words Volunteer?

  • Help reduce social isolation sometimes felt by older people living in care homes.
  • Work with service users who may be living with Dementia,

What’s involved?

  • Care words Volunteers work in pairs to deliver this new free library service.
  • Volunteers are assigned a care home which they visit for an hour, once every 4 weeks.
  • A specially prepared bag of texts, large print, images, objects, audiobooks and sensory items can be used to stimulate conversations in this group activity.
  • Volunteers are supported by the Care Words Co-ordinator and care support staff / activity organisers within the care settings.
  • Volunteers are asked to write a short evaluation after each visit and keep a note of how many people they have engaged with.
  • By building positive relationships with the older people in the care settings, volunteers in time will be able to tailor these sessions to the group’s needs and likes.
